View Episode >We thought, ‘Okay, every year, every new year, this is it. This year they're going to be gone. They're not going to last. Look at this. This is not Iran.’ Forty-three years, they're still governing and killing and murdering people. Everything against humanity
It could be but Department of Defense number one issue, the number one threat to the national security of the United States, is climate change. Now, I don't think the Department of Defense is a bunch of left wing leaning liberals that overflow things just to make a point.
The last politician that united people was Reagan…. I’ll give you a good example: When you see Democrats laughing at his jokes, you know they were together regardless
It's just amazing that we get to be able to be in the position where we can help but it also gives me maybe more anxiety because I'm like there's something we can do or maybe in an inflated sense of what we can do
I didn't like modern dance at all then. I was a ballet snob. I was like, "Okay, I'll go with you." And then the rest is history. I ended up falling in love, taking my pointe shoes off, dancing barefoot. The whole vibe was totally different. It was like Alvin Ailey was wild and free, and the ballet world was so tense and structured and tight
I was a hell of an altar boy, let me tell you. I was like [...] "Give me that incense." I was like a model in Chanel. I was swinging that incense burner off the end of that chain. There was the Clash and the Pretenders and Motorhead and a new wave going on, and it totally embraced us. And it was like being shot out of the cannon. Within just a few months, we weren't sleeping in the park anymore. We had a record deal
I knew from third grade on that I wanted to be an author or a writer. So that's kind of part of the whole story of writing is, you've got to harness your imagination and kind of fine tune it and create a story from it.
That's something that is kind of tough, being African American. I think for a lot of people the identity crisis of not knowing where you are from and not being able to trace your family history back that far is tough
You can kind of look at a glass half full or glass half empty. Everything in this country we got because we fought for it. So you could either say, ‘Wow, that really is shitty that you had to fight for every little thing.’ Or you can say, ‘Hey, we fought for every little thing and clearly we get it when we find hard enough
I would fuck up a lot, when I drank. And it was always when I would... Once I started feeling like I was getting my mind together from therapy, and I can't talk enough about therapy, I would go on and on about it. It had a profound, life-changing effect on me. Positive effect.
